Origins and Internment: When a Space Marine warrior suffers wounds so grievous that they cannot continue fighting, but their life force still clings on, they are offered the "honor" of internment within a Dreadnought. This process grafts their shattered body into a cybernetic walker, preserving their life and allowing them to continue their battle against the enemies of Mankind. Venerable Dreadnoughts, often referred to as "Ancients," are those who have survived this existence for an exceptionally long time, sometimes thousands of years. This immense longevity grants them unparalleled combat experience, deep intuition, and strategic insight, making them highly respected advisors.

Role and Perception: These venerable machines are typically only awakened from their deep, meditative slumbers for the most crucial battles or to offer their profound tactical advice. When roused, they bring to bear not only their formidable weaponry (often volatile ancient armaments like Assault Cannons or Heavy Flamers) but also the wisdom gleaned from countless campaigns. Their armor is often enhanced and adorned with chapter honors, reflecting their status.

Within their Chapters, Venerable Dreadnoughts are revered figures, treated with immense respect and regarded as living links to the Chapter's history. Their permanent loss in battle is deeply mourned. Even their Chaos counterparts exist, though they are often seen as cursed, denied the eternal rest that might otherwise be afforded. Some Chapters, like the Blood Angels, have unique challenges; their Dreadnoughts, if afflicted by the Black Rage, may join the suicidal charges of the Death Company.

Notable Examples: The annals of the Imperium are filled with tales of such heroes:

• Rylanor the Unyielding: A loyalist of the Emperor's Children, Rylanor endured 10,000 years, plotting revenge against his traitorous Primarch Fulgrim after the betrayal on Istvaan III. He nearly succeeded before his eventual demise.
• Ancient Damos: An Iron Hands hero, shattered during the brutal Scouring of Hume, was preserved in stasis before his internment into a Dreadnought sarcophagus.
• Brother Orias: A Grand Master of the Grey Knights, he famously nodded his consent for internment into an Aegis Dreadnought after being brought to the brink of death.
• Space Wolves Ancients: Many Space Wolves warriors are interred as Ancients, fighting in the name of Leman Russ for millennia, their wisdom said to be "as deep as the ocean."
