Warhammer 40K Death Guard Mortarion Primarch
TAG : Warhammer 40K Death Guard Mortarion Primarch
GAME : Warhammer 40K
Mortarion, the Daemon Primarch of the Death Guard, is one of the most iconic and terrifying figures in Warhammer 40,000. He is a truly ancient and immensely powerful being, a living plague and a general of immense strategic acumen, dedicated to Grandfather Nurgle.
Let's delve into the grim details of the Lord of Decay:
1. Origins and the Fall:
- Childhood on Barbarus: Mortarion was one of the twenty Primarchs created by the Emperor. He landed on the toxic, mist-shrouded world of Barbarus, a planet ruled by Necros, sorcerer-warlords who lived in mountain fortresses above the poisonous fog. He was raised by a benevolent warlord, but eventually hunted down and killed all the overlords, including his adoptive father, who he slew with his massive scythe, Silence.
- The Emperor's Discovery: The Emperor arrived just as Mortarion was about to succumb to the toxic atmosphere trying to reach the last fortress. This act, of the Emperor claiming victory when Mortarion felt it was his, sowed a seed of resentment that would fester for millennia.
- The Death Guard: He was reunited with his Legion, the XIVth, which he renamed the Death Guard. He instilled in them his philosophy of endurance, grim determination, and methodical warfare, favoring chemical warfare and the ability to withstand any foe.
- The Heresy and Betrayal: Mortarion was one of the first Primarchs to side with Horus during the Horus Heresy. Driven by his hatred of sorcery (a bitter irony given his eventual fate) and a deep-seated belief that the Emperor was a hypocrite, he led his Legion in countless atrocities against the Imperium.
- The Destroyer Plague: His ultimate damnation came during the journey to Terra. Trapped in the Warp, his fleet was becalmed and ravaged by a horrific, mutating plague known as the Destroyer Plague. Rather than allow his Legion to be utterly annihilated, Mortarion, after days of agonizing resistance, finally surrendered to Nurgle, embracing the plagues and transforming himself and his Legion into living vectors of disease.
2. The Daemon Primarch of Nurgle:
- Appearance: As a Daemon Primarch, Mortarion is a truly grotesque and imposing figure. He is immense, towering over even other Space Marines, with emaciated, sickly green flesh, bloated with disease. His most striking features are his two vast, moth-like wings, torn and tattered, perpetually trailing noxious fumes and dust that cause sickness and decay. He still wears his corrupted Power Armour, Barbarus, now fused to his flesh and oozing putrescence.
-
Weapons:
- Silence: His signature weapon, a colossal two-handed scythe. It is a terrifying weapon, not just for its physical might, but because its edge contains a potent psycho-active poison that rips apart a victim's mind and soul.
- The Lantern: A pistol Mortarion often carries, which projects a field of light that, far from illuminating, drains the life and vitality from those caught within it, leaving them withered husks.
- Phosphex Bombs: He also carries various alchemical weapons, including grenades filled with Phosphex, an abhorrent chemical fire that burns with unnatural intensity and cannot be easily extinguished.
- Powers and Aura: Mortarion is a being of immense physical strength and durability, virtually immune to pain and most forms of attack. As Nurgle's champion, he is surrounded by a sickening aura of entropy and decay. He can summon torrents of flies, manifest plagues, and sap the strength from his foes with but a glance. His very presence is sickening, causing flesh to rot, metal to rust, and hope to wither.
- Personality: Despite his transformation, Mortarion retains much of his grim, stoic, and resentful personality. He is a brooding, melancholic figure, perpetually annoyed and burdened by his existence. He despises the daemonic powers he wields, even as he uses them, a prisoner of his own choices. He believes in the virtue of endurance above all else and seeks to spread Nurgle's "gifts" across the galaxy, seeing it as the ultimate liberation from suffering and the final, inevitable truth of the universe.
3. Role in the 41st Millennium: Mortarion leads the Death Guard from his plague-ship, the Terminus Est, or from the Plague Planet, his twisted daemon world within the Eye of Terror. He periodically leads vast plague fleets into the Imperium, seeking to bring his "blessings" to new worlds. His campaigns are slow, grinding affairs, utterly focused on attrition and the complete biological corruption of his enemies. He is a master tactician, using the resilience of his Plague Marines to wear down even the most entrenched defenses.
In essence, Mortarion is a tragic figure, a proud warrior who fell to the very forces he once detested. He is a horrifying embodiment of disease, decay, and the crushing despair of endless suffering, a constant, vile threat to the Imperium of Man, forever driven by his bitter, unwavering resolve.
