TAG : Warhammer 40K Dark Angels Lion El Johnson
GAME : Warhammer 40K
Lion El'Jonson, often simply called "The Lion," is one of the most enigmatic and formidable of the Emperor's Primarchs, and the gene-father of the Dark Angels Legion (later Chapters of the Unforgiven). His story is one of loyalty, betrayal, and a long, secret slumber.
Early Life on Caliban: Like his brothers, El'Jonson was scattered across the galaxy from the Emperor's gene-labs. He crash-landed on Caliban, a verdant but Chaos-tainted Death World near the Eye of Terror, infested with monstrous beasts. Raised in isolation in the wilderness, he was eventually discovered by knights of the Order, a knightly force dedicated to purging the planet's beasts. Under the tutelage of Luther, his eventual betrayer, El'Jonson quickly became Grand Master of the Order, unifying the fractured knightly factions and effectively ruling Caliban. A deep, brotherly bond formed between him and Luther, though it was tragically destined to sour.
Reunion with the Emperor and the Great Crusade: When the Emperor arrived on Caliban, he recognized his lost son and granted El'Jonson command of the Ist Legion, which he renamed the Dark Angels, a name reflecting a Calibanite myth and their grim, secretive demeanor. Luther, too old for full Astartes transformation, received partial gene-enhancements and served as the Lion's trusted second-in-command. El'Jonson swiftly reorganized the Legion into six "wings," mirroring Caliban's knightly cohorts, forging them into one of the Great Crusade's most effective and feared forces, known for their decisive and often secretive warfare.
However, the Lion's personality often caused friction with his brother Primarchs. He was dour, solitary, and prioritized results over diplomacy, famously leading to a tense rivalry with Leman Russ of the Space Wolves. A pivotal moment came when El'Jonson, perhaps seeing Luther as a potential rival or believing he was needed to manage Caliban, sent him and a large contingent of Calibanite Dark Angels back to their homeworld for recruitment. Luther perceived this as an exile, and resentment began to fester, exacerbated by a resurgence of beasts and growing unrest on Caliban. The Lion even considered Luther for the position of Warmaster but ultimately dismissed him due to lingering doubts, further isolating his old friend.
The Horus Heresy and the Fall of Caliban: During the Horus Heresy, Lion El'Jonson remained staunchly loyal to the Emperor, serving as Lord Commander of Imperium Secundus, a desperate, short-lived second Imperium established in the galactic east to preserve the Emperor's dream should Terra fall.
Upon his return to Caliban after the Heresy, El'Jonson discovered that Luther had been seduced by Chaos, leading a full-blown rebellion of the garrisoned Dark Angels. This catastrophic betrayal led to a cataclysmic duel between the former brothers that ultimately shattered Caliban. Luther mortally wounded the Lion, who then vanished. The remnants of Caliban were transformed into the Dark Angels' mobile fortress-monastery, The Rock. The rebellious Dark Angels who survived, known forever as the Fallen, were scattered across time and space by Warp rifts, becoming the eternal, shameful secret that the Dark Angels and their successor Chapters, the Unforgiven, relentlessly hunt.
Current Status (M41 and Beyond): For millennia, Lion El'Jonson was believed lost, but his body lay in stasis deep within the Rock, guarded by the enigmatic Watchers in the Dark. His slumber was known only to them and, presumably, the Emperor. He was the only loyalist Primarch definitively confirmed to be alive, albeit comatose, in M41.
However, recent lore has seen his dramatic awakening in the Era Indomitus, following the opening of the Great Rift. Regaining his memories, he has emerged to coordinate defenses in the imperiled Imperium Nihilus. He has been seen allying with loyalist Dark Angels, other Chapters, and even some of the Fallen, fighting against the myriad threats to humanity. His return emphasizes his knightly focus, granting Dark Angels and their allies powerful buffs, such as the Crusader rule for melee dominance and enhanced leadership, as he once again walks among his sons to protect the Imperium he helped forge.
