The Dark Apostle is a figure of immense influence, a preacher of unholy writ who whips their followers into a frenzy of zealous devotion and unspeakable acts in the name of the Dark Gods.

1. Spiritual Guide: Dark Apostles are the primary religious figures, interpreting the will of the Chaos Gods, delivering dark prophecies, and presiding over blasphemous rituals and sacrifices.
2. Moral (or Immoral) Leader: They inspire their fellow Chaos Space Marines, cultists, and mutated thralls to ever-greater acts of brutality and devotion to Chaos. Their sermons are a torrent of hatred for the Imperium and promises of power and glory from the Warp.
3. Instigator of Zealotry: On the battlefield, they are not just combatants but catalysts, their booming litanies of hate and praise driving their warband to fight with unnatural ferocity, shrugging off pain and fear.
4. Enforcer of Dogma: They crush dissent and heresy within their own ranks with merciless efficiency, ensuring that all follow the path of the Dark Gods, or face their brutal "redemption."
5. Collector of Faith: Dark Apostles understand that the favour of the Dark Gods is bought with faith and bloodshed. They orchestrate grand acts of sacrifice and conquest to draw the attention and blessings of the Warp.

Many Dark Apostles are former Loyalist Chaplains who, disillusioned by the Imperium's hypocrisy or seduced by promises of true power, fell to Chaos during the Horus Heresy or in the millennia since. Others are simply powerful Chaos Space Marines who demonstrated an exceptional talent for rhetoric, manipulation, and fanatical devotion to the Ruinous Powers, rising through the ranks by converting and corrupting.

Their path is one of constant blasphemy, sacrifice, and the systematic undoing of Imperial ideals. They are often profoundly touched by the Warp, even if they don't wield psychic powers themselves, channeling the energies of Chaos through sheer devotion.

Dark Apostles are instantly recognizable by their grim and corrupted regalia:

• Accursed Crozius: Their iconic weapon, a grotesque parody of the Loyalist Crozius Arcanum. It is typically adorned with skulls, unholy symbols, and often incorporates razor-sharp blades, daemon-bound segments, or energy fields that rip through foes. It is a conduit for their vile prayers and divine (unholy) favour.
• Corrupted Power Armour: Adorned with spikes, chains, flayed skin, skulls, and the blasphemous sigils of the Chaos Gods (either Undivided or specific to a patron deity like Khorne, Nurgle, Tzeentch, or Slaanesh). Their armour is often a dark, unsettling colour, typically black, but often with splashes of their Legion's colours.
• Blasphemous Tomes & Relics: They often carry chains of forbidden scrolls, bound books made from daemon hide, or gruesome relics that further amplify their dark invocations.
• Auras of Corruption: The constant exposure to the Warp and their unholy practices often leave them physically warped, with pale skin, glowing eyes, or minor daemonic mutations, further cementing their intimidating presence.
• Optional Ranged Weapons: While preferring to be in the thick of the sermon-cum-battle, they may also carry a bolt pistol or plasma pistol.

A Dark Apostle is rarely alone. They are typically accompanied by a retinue of two Dark Disciples. These are zealous followers, often lesser Chaos Space Marines or heavily mutated cultists, who serve several purposes:

• Amplifiers: They chant in unison with the Apostle, amplifying their dark litanies and invocations, making them more potent and far-reaching.
• Bodyguards: They act as personal protection, absorbing blows and engaging threats directed at their master.
• Relic Bearers: They may carry additional unholy relics, censers belching noxious fumes, or banners depicting profane iconography.

On the tabletop, the Dark Apostle is a crucial HQ choice that acts as a force multiplier and a dangerous melee combatant:

• Inspirational Leader: Their primary role is to buff nearby friendly units (Chaos Space Marines, Cultists, Daemon Engines) through their Dark Litanies of Hate or similar abilities. These litanies can grant re-rolls to hit, invulnerable saves, extra attacks, or other combat enhancements, making their affected units significantly more potent.
• Close Combat Threat: While a support unit, a Dark Apostle is still a Space Marine in power armour wielding a powerful melee weapon. They can hold their own and even dispatch many enemy characters or infantry units.
• Aura of Terror: Their presence often imposes a negative modifier on enemy leadership or causes fear, reflecting their terrifying visage and unholy power.
• Psychic Resistance: Their fervent faith and exposure to the Warp often grant them a degree of resistance to enemy psychic powers.
