• The Black Rage: All Blood Angels and their successor chapters are afflicted by the Black Rage, a psychic echo of their Primarch Sanguinius's death at the hands of Horus. When it overtakes a Space Marine, their mind shatters, believing themselves to be Sanguinius during the final moments of the Horus Heresy. They become unstoppable, feral warriors consumed by grief and righteous fury, often seeing all enemies (and sometimes even allies) as Horus himself.
• The Death Company: Those who fall to the Black Rage are inducted into the Death Company, clad in black armour with red crosses, and unleashed upon the enemy in a final, glorious, and suicidal charge.
• Astorath's Sacred Duty: This is where Astorath comes in. While the Death Company is allowed to fight and die for the Emperor, they cannot be allowed to linger or potentially harm their own allies in their uncontrollable frenzy. Astorath's duty is to locate those Death Company Marines who have fallen too far, whose rage has consumed them utterly, and grant them a swift, merciful end. He "redeems" them, ensuring their souls find peace and their bodies do not fall into enemy hands or become a danger to the Chapter.
• A Tragic Executioner: This makes him the Chapter's most poignant executioner. He is not a punisher; he is a purveyor of final mercy. Each blow of his axe brings peace to a tormented brother, a brother he once knew and fought alongside. This constant, soul-crwrenching task has made him grim, stoic, and silent, bearing the weight of countless such executions.
  
  
• Solemn and Austere: Astorath is a figure of absolute resolve, but also immense melancholy. He rarely speaks, and when he does, it is with a grave and measured tone.
• Unwavering Faith: His faith in the Emperor and Sanguinius is absolute, enabling him to endure his horrific duty without succumbing to despair or the very madness he cures. He believes firmly that his actions save his brothers' souls.
• Battle with the Red Thirst: Like all Blood Angels, he is also afflicted by the Red Thirst, the vampiric urge for blood. He constantly battles these twin curses within himself, making his control even more impressive and his burden even heavier.
  
  
• The Executioner's Axe: Astorath's signature weapon, a colossal two-handed power axe forged for its sacred purpose. It is rumored to be capable of cutting through the very soul of a Space Marine, delivering instant oblivion.
• Jump Pack: Astorath always wears a jump pack, allowing him to rapidly deploy to any part of the battlefield where a Blood Angel has succumbed and requires his "mercy," or to lead the Death Company into the thickest fighting.
• Black Chaplain Armour: Clad in the traditional black power armour of a Chaplain, adorned with numerous purity seals, Sanguinius iconography, and the unique markings of his office as Redemptor.
• Rosarius: The symbol of a Chaplain's spiritual authority and a personal force field generator, protecting him in the thickest fighting.
  
  
• High Chaplain: He holds the highest spiritual rank within the Chapter, second only to the Chapter Master (Commander Dante).
• Leader of the Death Company: While he brings peace to some, he also leads the Death Company into battle, inspiring them to unbelievable feats of suicidal bravery and ensuring their final moments are glorious and impactful. He understands their rage, channeling it towards the foe.
• Spiritual Guide: Despite his grim duty, he also offers spiritual counsel to his battle-brothers, guiding them through the psychological torments of their genetic flaws.

On the tabletop, Astorath is a powerful HQ choice that greatly synergizes with Death Company units.

• Melee Powerhouse: His Executioner's Axe is a devastating weapon, capable of tearing through almost any enemy unit in close combat.
