The Crusader Squad is the very heart and soul of a Black Templars Crusade. Unlike standard Space Marine Chapters that organize their battle-brothers into rigid companies and squads of ten, the Black Templars adhere to a more fluid, crusade-based structure. The Crusader Squad reflects this, serving as a dynamic and spiritually driven fighting formation.

At its core, a Crusader Squad is a flexible combat unit composed of Initiates (fully-fledged Space Marines) and often Neophytes (aspirant Space Marines in training). This unique composition sets them apart and is central to the Black Templars' martial doctrine and spiritual practice.

Initiates: These are the veteran warriors, clad in power armour, leading the charge with unwavering faith and deadly skill. They are often armed with a mix of boltguns, chainswords, power swords, power fists, and other close-combat weapons, reflecting their preference for melee.

Neophytes: Young aspirants, often just out of their arduous training and gene-seed implantation, are assigned to Crusader Squads under the tutelage of an Initiate. They typically wear lighter Carapace Armour (or sometimes Power Armour in more modern lore/models) and are armed with shotguns or bolt rifles, though they too are eager to prove themselves in the fray. Their inclusion ensures that every battle is a training ground, a proving ground, and a spiritual crucible.

Fanatical Zeal: Black Templars are renowned for their unwavering, almost insane, devotion to the Emperor and their fervent hatred of mutants, heretics, and xenos. Crusader Squads embody this zeal, charging into battle with war cries and litanies, often shunning ranged combat for the glory of the close-quarters kill.

Close Combat Prowess: While they carry boltguns, their true passion lies in melee. Crusader Squads are engineered for devastating charges, closing with the enemy rapidly to unleash a torrent of chainsword blows, power weapon strikes, and the raw force of their armored bodies.

Vows & Oaths: Before each crusade or major engagement, Black Templars take sacred vows, such as the "Suffer Not the Unclean to Live" or "Abhor the Witch, Destroy the Witch." These vows guide their actions and dictate their preferred targets and tactics, often reinforcing their close-combat focus.

Spiritual Tutelage: The presence of Neophytes is not just practical; it's spiritual. Initiates act as mentors, guiding their young charges in the ways of war and faith, demonstrating courage and ferocity firsthand. This creates an unbreakable bond and ensures the transmission of the Chapter's unique traditions.

Flexible Size: Crusader Squads can vary greatly in size, from a handful of veterans and their novices to larger formations of up to twenty or more Space Marines. This flexibility allows them to adapt to different battlefield roles and objectives within a larger crusade force.

Iconography: Black Templars are visually distinct, favoring black armour, tabards, purity seals, and a plethora of religious iconography. Crusader Squads often carry Chapter Banners and elaborate Relics into battle, further inspiring their brethren and striking fear into their enemies.

On the tabletop and in the lore, Crusader Squads are primarily assault units.

Spearhead Charges: They excel at leading the charge, breaking enemy lines, and engaging high-priority targets in brutal hand-to-hand combat.

Objective Holders: Their durability and numbers (especially larger squads) make them excellent for seizing and holding critical objectives once they've cleared the immediate threat.

Counter-Charge: They can also be held in reserve to launch devastating counter-attacks against enemy assault units.
