The Wraithlord is a towering, elegant, and immensely powerful war-construct of the Aeldari (formerly known as Eldar). It embodies the tragic majesty and advanced psycho-technology of this ancient, dying race.

What it Is: At its core, a Wraithlord is an automaton animated by the spirit of a deceased Aeldari hero. When an Eldar dies, their soul is typically captured in a Spirit Stone (also known as a Waystone) to prevent it from being devoured by Slaanesh, the Chaos God born from the Eldar's ancient hedonism. While most spirit stones are eventually interred in a Infinity Circuit (the collective consciousness of a Craftworld's dead), some are placed within the psychic matrix of a Wraithlord.

Appearance: Wraithlords are instantly recognizable by their:

• Tall, slender, and graceful form: Despite their bulk, they maintain the aesthetic elegance inherent to Aeldari design.
• Ceramite or Wraithbone construction: Composed of psycho-plastic Wraithbone, a material grown and shaped by psychically gifted Bonesingers, it's incredibly resilient and can self-repair.
• Intricate carvings and runes: Often adorned with Eldar glyphs and patterns, reflecting the spirit within.
• Distinctive head/face: Usually featuring a helm-like structure that hints at a face, often with glowing "eyes."

Role & Purpose: Wraithlords serve as heavy support and shock troops for Aeldari armies. Their key roles include:

• Linebreakers: Their immense strength and durability allow them to smash through enemy formations.
• Guardian of the Living: They often protect critical positions or valuable units, acting as stalwart defenders.
• Anti-Tank/Anti-Monster: Equipped with powerful weapons, they can take on heavily armored vehicles and monstrous creatures.
• Symbol of Sacrifice: For the Aeldari, a Wraithlord represents the ultimate sacrifice – a hero continuing to fight for their people even after death, often at great personal psychic cost to the spirit animating it.

Animation & Psychic Link: The spirit within the Wraithlord is typically a mighty warrior or noble from the Craftworld's past. While the spirit grants the construct its combat prowess and tactical insight, the animation process is often agonizing for the soul. The constant struggle between the spirit's desire for rest and its duty to its people is a core aspect of the Wraithlord's tragic existence. A living Eldar Spiritseer often accompanies Wraithlords to help guide and soothe the tormented spirits, ensuring their effectiveness in battle.

Armament: Wraithlords are versatile war machines, capable of mounting a wide array of devastating weaponry:

• Melee:
  • Ghostglaive: A massive, psycho-active energy blade capable of scything through armor and flesh.
  • Wraithlord Fists: Even without specialized weapons, their enormous Wraithbone fists can crush enemies and vehicles.
• Ranged: They can mount up to two heavy weapons, typically from the following options:
  • Bright Lance: A powerful laser weapon, excellent for anti-tank duties.
  • Scatter Laser: A multi-shot laser weapon, highly effective against infantry and light vehicles.
  • Shuriken Cannon: Fires a hail of monomolecular discs, shredding infantry.
  • Starcannon: A plasma-based weapon, good against heavily armored infantry.
  • Flamer/Heavy Flamer: For clearing out hordes of infantry at close range.

Lore Significance: Wraithlords, along with Wraithguard and Wraithseers, form the core of the Aeldari's "Wraith constructs" – a desperate measure to preserve their warrior strength despite their dwindling numbers. They are a poignant reminder of the Aeldari's glorious past, their advanced technology, and their grim determination to survive in a galaxy that constantly threatens their extinction.
