GAME : Warhammer 40K

The Wraithguard are heavy infantry war-constructs of the Aeldari, smaller than a Wraithlord but still significantly larger and tougher than a living Eldar warrior. They serve as immensely durable and destructive shock troops.

What it Is: Similar to Wraithlords, a Wraithguard is an automaton constructed from Wraithbone and animated by the spirit of a deceased Aeldari. When an Eldar dies, their soul is typically captured in a Spirit Stone (or Waystone) to prevent its consumption by Slaanesh. While many spirits find rest in the Infinity Circuit, some are placed within the psychic matrix of a Wraithguard, offering them a second, eternal life of service on the battlefield.

Appearance: Wraithguard are instantly recognizable:

  • Imposing, humanoid form: They are significantly larger and bulkier than a regular Eldar, standing perhaps 8-9 feet tall.
  • Solid, elegant Wraithbone construction: Their bodies are formed from psycho-plastic Wraithbone, giving them incredible resilience and the ability to self-repair.
  • Featureless "head": Unlike the more ornate Wraithlord, their head is typically smooth and featureless, sometimes with glowing "eyes" or a visor slit, adding to their eerie, silent presence.
  • Integrated weaponry: Their powerful weapons are often seamlessly integrated into their arms or shoulders, appearing as extensions of their bodies.

Role & Purpose: Wraithguard are the ultimate heavy infantry for the Aeldari, used for:

  • Shock Troops: They spearhead assaults, breaking through enemy lines with their resilience and devastating firepower.
  • Close-Quarters Combat: While formidable at range, their sheer durability makes them excellent for holding ground or pushing into close-range engagements.
  • Bodyguards: Often deployed to protect valuable units, like Farseers or other psychic leaders.
  • Urban Warfare: Their toughness and destructive weapons make them ideal for clearing entrenched positions or fighting in dense environments.

Animation & Psychic Link: The spirits animating Wraithguard are typically those of less renowned warriors or citizens compared to the heroes who might become Wraithlords. However, the process is no less agonizing. The spirit within struggles constantly between its desire for final rest and its duty to fight for its Craftworld. Due to this internal torment, Wraithguard are typically accompanied by a living Spiritseer. The Spiritseer acts as an intermediary, calming the restless spirits, focusing their will, and guiding their actions on the battlefield, making them invaluable for directing these powerful but potentially unstable units.

5. Armament: The Power of D-Weapons: Wraithguard are most famous for their unique and terrifying D-weapons (Distortion Weapons), which literally tear their targets out of reality.

  • D-scythe: This is the most common and iconic weapon. A short-ranged, area-of-effect weapon that projects a blast of raw warp energy, violently ripping apart molecules and sending enemies into the Warp. It's devastating against massed infantry and even light vehicles.
  • Wraithcannon: A longer-ranged version of the D-scythe, the Wraithcannon fires a concentrated beam that punches holes through armor and living tissue by shunting parts of the target directly into the Warp. It's a premier anti-tank and anti-monster weapon.

These D-weapons are incredibly potent but also dangerous to the wielder, as their energies flirt with the Immaterium.

Lore Significance: Wraithguard, alongside Wraithlords and the psychic Wraithseers, represent the Aeldari's desperation. As a dwindling race, they cannot afford to lose their living warriors lightly. By animating their dead, they leverage their ancestral strength and advanced technology to fight battles they otherwise couldn't. They are a poignant symbol of the Aeldari's profound respect for their dead, their mastery of psychic technology, and their grim determination to survive against overwhelming odds, even if it means denying their heroes eternal peace.
