TAG : Warhammer 40K Aeldari Guardians
GAME : Warhammer 40K
Guardians are not dedicated warriors on the Path of the Warrior (like Dire Avengers or Striking Scorpions). Instead, they are citizens of the Craftworld – artisans, scholars, healers, engineers – who take up arms only when their home is directly threatened, or when the Craftworld goes to war. They represent the Aeldari's profound dedication to their people's survival.
What they Are: Every able-bodied adult Aeldari citizen is trained to serve as a Guardian. When the Craftworld faces a threat or embarks on a military campaign, these citizens temporarily set aside their chosen Paths and don their war gear. They are the first and often last line of defence, a citizen militia ready to lay down their lives for their Craftworld.
Appearance:
- Standard Aeldari Armour: Guardians wear a resilient, form-fitting armour, typically made of lightweight psycho-plastic material, often painted in the distinctive colours and runes of their specific Craftworld.
- Distinctive Helms: Their helmets are usually elegant and provide advanced optical and communication systems, without the elaborate crests or distinctive shapes of Aspect Warrior helms.
- Practicality: Their gear is practical and functional, designed for general combat rather than specialized roles.
Role & Purpose: Guardians fulfill a broad range of vital roles in an Aeldari army:
- Defence of the Craftworld: Their primary role is to protect their homeworld from invasion.
- Core Infantry: They form the basic infantry units of an Aeldari force, holding objectives, screening more specialized units, and providing general-purpose firepower.
- Versatility: While not specialists, they are highly adaptable and can be configured for different battlefield roles.
- Free up Aspect Warriors: By handling the general combat duties, Guardians allow the highly specialized and fewer-in-number Aspect Warriors to focus on their unique and often more critical tasks.
Types of Guardians:
-
Guardian Defenders:
- Role: These are the most common type, forming the primary line infantry. They are equipped for general combat, focused on ranged engagements.
- Armament: Each Guardian Defender carries a Shuriken Catapult – a rapid-fire weapon that projects monomolecular discs, capable of shredding flesh and light armour.
- Heavy Weapon Platform: A crucial element of Guardian Defender squads is their integrated Heavy Weapon Platform. This anti-gravity mount carries a powerful heavy weapon (such as a Bright Lance, Scatter Laser, Starcannon, Shuriken Cannon, or Missile Launcher) and is operated by two Guardians, significantly boosting the squad's anti-infantry or anti-tank capabilities.
-
Storm Guardians:
- Role: These Guardians are equipped and trained for close-quarters combat, clearing objectives, and swift assaults. They are more aggressive than their Defender counterparts.
- Armament: They typically carry a Shuriken Pistol and a Power Sword or Chainsword for melee combat. They can also be equipped with specialist close-range weapons like Flamers (for clearing out hordes) or Fusion Guns (for melting heavy armour).
Lore Significance: Guardians are deeply significant to Aeldari lore:
- The Path System: They underscore the Aeldari Path system. A Guardian is an Eldar who has temporarily stepped onto the Path of the Warrior out of necessity, but will return to their chosen civilian Path once the war is over. This contrasts sharply with the permanently dedicated Aspect Warriors.
- Sacrifice and Duty: Their willingness to interrupt their lives and face unimaginable horrors highlights the Aeldari's profound sense of duty and their love for their Craftworld.
- Dwindling Race: The fact that even non-specialized citizens must take up arms reflects the Aeldari's dwindling numbers and the constant existential threat they face in the galaxy.
- Skill and Training: Even though they are a militia, Aeldari Guardians are still incredibly skilled fighters, possessing millennia of martial heritage and advanced training, making them superior to many other races' regular troops.
