The Pteraxii are specialized winged infantry units of the Adeptus Mechanicus, often deployed by Skitarii forces. They are cybernetically augmented shock troops designed for rapid airborne assaults, scouting, and flanking maneuvers. They represent the Adeptus Mechanicus's focus on utilitarian engineering and specialized, biomechanical warfare.

There are two primary variants of Pteraxii, each with a distinct role:

1. Pteraxii Sterylizors:

   • Role: These are the aggressive, close-range assault specialists, designed to immolate enemy infantry and engage in brutal close combat. They are shock troops meant to clear out entrenched positions or vulnerable units.
   • Appearance: They are typically depicted with large, metallic wings that resemble the skeletal structures of ancient pterosaurs, often with vents and nozzles for jet propulsion. Their torsos are heavily cybernetically augmented, and they carry distinctive weaponry.
   • Wargear:
     • Phosphor Torches: Their signature weapons are wrist-mounted phosphor torches, which unleash torrents of searing, flammable chemicals. These are potent short-range weapons against infantry, causing horrific burns.
     • Pteraxii Talons: For close combat, they use razor-sharp talons on their feet, designed to rip and tear at foes during fly-by attacks or when they engage on the ground.
   • Combat Style: Sterylizors are fast and aggressive. They will swoop down, unleash their phosphor torches to incinerate clustered enemies, and then engage with their talons, often using their speed to reposition and strike again.

2. Pteraxii Skystalkers:

   • Role: Skystalkers are precision skirmishers and long-range harassment units. They are designed to swiftly flank enemy forces, pick off vulnerable targets, and disrupt enemy lines with accurate ranged fire.
   • Appearance: Similar winged cybernetic augmentations to Sterylizors, but their weaponry is different, reflecting their ranged role.
   • Wargear:
     • Flechette Blasters: Their primary weapons are multi-barrelled flechette blasters, which fire a storm of razor-sharp darts at high velocity. These are effective rapid-fire weapons for shredding light infantry.
     • Pteraxii Talons: Like Sterylizors, they also possess talons for close combat, though they prefer to keep their distance.
   • Combat Style: Skystalkers will use their superior mobility to quickly get into advantageous positions, unleash a volley of flechettes, and then relocate to avoid return fire. They excel at harassing enemy flanks, targeting vulnerable support units, or completing objectives quickly.

Common Characteristics of all Pteraxii:

• Rapid Mobility: Their most defining trait is their incredible speed and aerial maneuverability. They can swiftly cross the battlefield, bypass obstacles, and deliver sudden attacks.
• Cybernetic Augmentation: Like all Skitarii, they are extensively cybernetically augmented, their biological components interwoven with machine parts for enhanced performance and resilience.
• Deep Strike/Flanking: Their flight capabilities often allow them to be deployed from reserves, appearing unexpectedly on enemy flanks or behind their lines.
• Adeptus Mechanicus Protocols: They benefit from the various Canticles of the Omnissiah and other doctrinal rules that enhance the performance of Adeptus Mechanicus forces.
• High-Value Targets: Due to their specialized nature and aggressive deployment, they are often high-value targets for enemy fire.

In essence, Pteraxii are the Adeptus Mechanicus's answer to rapid deployment and airborne shock tactics. Whether incinerating foes with phosphor torches or peppering them with flechettes, they bring a unique blend of speed, firepower, and technological horror to the battlefields of the 41st Millennium.
