Neurogaunts are specialized Tyranid bioforms, genetically engineered by the Hive Mind to serve as living conduits for the synaptic network. While individually weak, their collective purpose is vital: to extend the reach of the Hive Mind and strengthen its control over the lesser organisms of the swarm, ensuring unshakeable coordination and tactical cohesion.

Appearance & Biology: Neurogaunts are small, insectoid creatures, roughly comparable in size to a Hormagaunt or Termagant, but with distinct biological features that set them apart:

  • Brain-like Sac: Their most prominent feature is a large, pulsating, exposed brain-like sac on their backs, often referred to as a Neuroloid. This organ is the core of their synaptic function, glowing faintly with bio-luminescent energy.
  • Chitinous Plates: Their bodies are covered in a carapace, providing some basic protection, but they are generally less armoured than larger Tyranids.
  • Small Claws/Talons: They possess rudimentary claws or talons, suitable for basic close combat, but they are not primarily fighting organisms.
  • Simple Mouthparts: Their heads feature simple, fanged mandibles, though they are not designed for deep penetration.
  • Multilegged: Like most Gaunts, they typically have multiple insectoid legs for rapid movement across varied terrain.

Role & Function in the Hive Fleet: Neurogaunts serve a vital, if often overlooked, support role within the Tyranid invasion force:

  • Synaptic Extension: Their primary purpose is to extend the synaptic web. By forming a living chain, Neurogaunts can project the will of the Hive Mind further into the battlefield, allowing more distant or isolated Tyranid units to remain under coherent control. This is especially crucial for smaller organisms like other Gaunts or Ripper swarms that might otherwise fall into instinctual chaos without a strong synaptic link.
  • Chaff & Screening: Like other Gaunt strains, they are deployed in vast numbers to overwhelm the enemy through sheer weight of bodies. They act as a living screen, soaking up enemy fire and tying up enemy units, allowing larger, more destructive Tyranid organisms to advance unharmed or execute critical maneuvers.
  • Local Control Nodes: In the absence of larger Synapse creatures, a cluster of Neurogaunts can act as a localized, albeit weaker, synaptic node, helping to maintain some semblance of order among nearby broods.
  • Minor Offensive Capability: While not heavy hitters, their numbers and basic claws can still inflict casualties on unarmored targets, and they can tie up enemy units in melee, preventing them from shooting at more valuable Tyranids.

Unique Abilities & Powers:

  • Neural Link (or similar rule): This is their defining ability. Models within a certain range of a Neurogaunt unit are considered to be within Synapse range (or gain a specific benefit related to Synapse). This is crucial for enabling the special rules and reliability of other Tyranid units that require a synaptic connection.
  • Durable in Numbers: While individual Neurogaunts are fragile, their sheer numbers make them resilient. Enemies must expend significant resources to clear out entire broods, especially when they are simply acting as a bullet sponge for more valuable units.
  • Instinctive Behaviour Counteraction: By extending Synapse, Neurogaunts help to prevent other Tyranid units from suffering the detrimental effects of "Instinctive Behaviour" – a state where Tyranids lose their focus and become less effective without the direct guidance of the Hive Mind.

Strategic Impact: Neurogaunts represent the Hive Mind's meticulous approach to warfare. They are not designed for glory or heavy kills, but for the fundamental, unseen architecture of control that makes the Tyranid swarm so effective. By ensuring the synaptic network remains robust and far-reaching, Neurogaunts allow the Tyranid invasion to operate as a single, terrifyingly coordinated super-organism, driving relentlessly forward and consuming everything in its path. Ignoring them can lead to a breakdown in your enemy's ability to respond to the Hive Fleet's perfectly orchestrated assault.
